After an unusually dry October, autumn weather has returned to Portugal. IPMA (the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere) has named the depression near the Azores Bruna and expects rain and thunderstorms across mainland Portugal until at least November 13.
Today, November 6, a yellow weather warning is in effect from 3 pm until midnight in eight coastal districts, stretching from Viana do Castelo to Setúbal, including Lisbon and Porto. Madeira will be under an orange warning from Saturday evening, November 7, with heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 100 km/h.
The main band of bad weather is expected to reach mainland Portugal on Sunday, November 8. Mountain areas could receive more than 200 mm of rain over the course of the week, while southerly wind gusts along the western coast could reach 70 km/h.
The rain will also bring warmer temperatures. Overnight lows will rise by 5–9°C by Saturday, with daytime temperatures ranging from 16°C to 20°C. In inland Alentejo, the Tagus Valley and the Algarve, temperatures could reach 24°C.
The latest weather warnings are available on the IPMA website.
