Weekend Guide: October 9–11

Listen

This weekend, Lisbon has three major concerts: Gilberto Gil with his opera, Beatrice Rana at Gulbenkian, and Minkowski at CCB. The rest is mostly chamber and niche music, and it is as good as your appetite for experimentation.

Lisbon and surroundings

Gilberto Gil — “Amor Azul”
📅 October 10, 21:00
📍 Coliseu dos Recreios
💸 from €60
Gilberto Gil (a Brazilian music legend and former Minister of Culture of Brazil) is usually heard with a guitar, but here he is singing in an opera. “Amor Azul” features 40 songs based on the “Gita Govinda”, a 12th-century Indian poem about the love of the god Krishna. Gil is joined on stage by a choir, symphony orchestra and opera company from Bahia, conducted by the opera’s co-creator Aldo Brizzi. There is only one performance in Lisbon, and the project is unlikely to return.

Djavan — “Djavanear 50 Anos”
📅 October 11, 21:00
📍 MEO Arena
💸 €30–69
The Brazilian singer and guitarist, author of “Oceano” and “Flor de Lis”, celebrates 50 years on stage with a concert made entirely of hits. Smooth MPB (música popular brasileira, Brazilian popular music) with jazz harmonies that several generations of Brazilians grew up with. The arena will sing along to every song, and you will probably start singing too.

Beatrice Rana
📅 October 11, 18:00
📍 Gulbenkian, Grand Auditorium
💸 €24–46
The Italian pianist is invited by the world’s leading orchestras, and her recordings are released by Warner Classics. The first half is dry, mathematical Bach and Debussy’s études; the second is nocturnal Chopin: nocturnes, a ballade and a scherzo. Two hours after which you will want to walk home across the whole of Lisbon.

Les Musiciens du Louvre and Marc Minkowski — Handel
📅 October 11, 19:00 (pre-concert talk at 18:30)
📍 CCB, Grand Auditorium, Belém
💸 Ticket
French conductor Marc Minkowski founded this orchestra in 1982 and still performs Baroque music with it on period instruments. All six of Handel’s Concerti grossi will be performed in one evening. Minkowski goes for fast, nervous tempos, so there will be no time to get bored. If you are not sure you like Baroque, start with this concert.

Dire Straits Legacy
📅 October 10, 21:00
📍 Sagres Campo Pequeno; they are also playing Multiusos de Gondomar near Porto on October 9
💸 €35–120
Mark Knopfler will not be there, but people who stood alongside him on stage will: keyboardist Alan Clark, guitarist Phil Palmer, drummer Danny Cummings and saxophonist Mel Collins of King Crimson. Italian singer Marco Caviglia is on vocals. If you missed Dire Straits in the 1980s, this is about as close to the original as you can get today: “Sultans of Swing” and “Money for Nothing” in a circular bullring.

Raquel Tavares — Amadora Fado
📅 October 10, 21:00
📍 Cineteatro D. João V, Amadora
💸 €12,50
The Lisbon fado singer, who has been singing since she was seven, closes the Amadora Fado festival. Here, fado is heard in a concert hall rather than between the main course and dessert, and the voice comes through without the clatter of cutlery. A good way to understand why the Portuguese love this genre.

Luís Vicente Trio — “Expanding Horizons”
📅 October 10, 22:00
📍 Fórum Cultural do Seixal
💸 €12
Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente (named Musician of the Year by jazz.pt in 2025) has put together an international lineup for SeixalJazz. He is joined by Argentine pianist Leo Genovese, American saxophonist Tony Malaby, bassist Gonçalo Almeida and Dutch drummer Onno Govaert. This is free jazz: nobody knows where the music will turn a minute from now, including the musicians themselves. €12, on the other side of the Tagus.

Dal
📅 October 10, 19:00
📍 Gulbenkian, Grand Auditorium
💸 €19
A Korean duo playing two traditional zithers. The strings of the gayageum are plucked with the fingers, while the geomungo is struck with a bamboo stick, producing a sound that can be silky one moment and percussive the next. 70 minutes of wordless music that is almost impossible to hear elsewhere in Lisbon.

Orquestra Metropolitana Soloists — “Zelenka”
📅 October 10, 21:00
📍 Igreja de São Bartolomeu do Beato, Rua do Grilo 116 C
💸 Free
Jan Dismas Zelenka was a Czech composer at the Dresden court, highly valued by Bach and then forgotten for two centuries. Two oboes, bassoon and harpsichord will perform his trio sonatas, as well as a Fantasy and Fugue by Bach, beneath the vaults of an old church in Beato. Admission is free and no tickets are needed: just show up.

FEIA #6
📅 October 10, 15:00–23:00; October 11, 15:00–19:00
📍 ZABRA, Av. Infante D. Henrique 332; on Saturday, continuation at Damas from 22:00
💸 Pay what you can
More than twenty independent Portuguese labels in one room, each bringing a concert, DJ set or video projection. Here you buy a record from the person who released it and an hour later hear the band live. If you want to understand what is happening in Lisbon beyond fado, start here.

Festival Imersivo
📅 October 9–11, concerts at 19:30
📍 Lisboa Incomum
💸 Free, registration required
Electroacoustic music comes from a dome of speakers all around you, making it feel as if you are inside the instrument. Friday brings the premiere of “Re-Memory I” by composer Hugo Vasco Reis with violist Trevor McTait, while on Saturday clarinetist Catarina Crespo performs. A VR installation by Ricardo Almeida runs during the day on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free, but advance registration is required.

Porto and surroundings

Rui Veloso Trio
📅 October 9, 21:00
📍 Super Bock Arena
💸 Ticket
Rui Veloso is known as the father of Portuguese rock: everyone in Portugal knows his 1980 album “Ar de Rock”. Now he takes to a circular stage with two guitarists, Alexandre Manaia and Eduardo Espinho: just guitars, blues and ballads. In Porto, everyone knows his songs, and that is the main reason to go — to see the whole city sing along.

Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto — “Mozart’s Serenade”
📅 October 9, 21:00
📍 Casa da Música, Sala Suggia
💸 €26–30
Mozart wrote Serenade K.286 for four orchestras that answer one another like an echo. A recording cannot convey this; you need to hear it in the hall. Dutch conductor Jan Willem de Vriend, a specialist in 18th-century music, leads the performance. Alongside Mozart, there will be symphonies by two Bachs, father and son, and Portuguese composer João Domingos Bomtempo. And the Rem Koolhaas-designed hall is reason enough to come even without the music.

Midori Hirano — “Otonoma”
📅 October 9, 21:30
📍 GNRation, Braga
💸 €9
The Berlin-based Japanese pianist runs her piano through modular synthesizers until it dissolves into ambient. This is material from her new album on the American label Thrill Jockey. If you like Nils Frahm (the German composer who combines piano and electronics), it is worth taking the trip to Braga for this one: €9 and about 45 minutes by train.

ars ad hoc
📅 October 11, 18:00
📍 Serralves Museum Auditorium
💸 €7,50
A Portuguese string trio plays music in which violin, viola and cello rustle, creak and whisper. The programme includes Hungarian composer György Kurtág, Italian Salvatore Sciarrino, German Helmut Lachenmann, French Marc André and a world premiere by Spanish composer Inés Badalo. After this hour, you will hear the sounds around you differently. Best experienced after a walk through Serralves Park.

Away from the capitals

Jazz ao Centro — final night
📅 October 10, 21:30 and 23:00
📍 TAGV and Salão Brazil, Coimbra
💸 Ticket
Two concerts close the main jazz festival in central Portugal. At 21:30, drummer Pedro Melo Alves leads the 17-piece Omniae Large Ensemble: a big band that sounds like contemporary composition. At 23:00, the small club hosts Carlos Bica AZUL: the Berlin-based bassist with German guitarist Frank Möbus and American drummer Jim Black. The trio celebrates 30 years of its “Azul” album. A good reason to spend an evening in student-filled Coimbra.

Dance

The main event is No Art on the waterfront in Algés. The rest are familiar club nights and a few daytime open-air parties that depend on the weather more than the lineup.

Lisbon and surroundings

No Art Lisbon
📅 October 10, 15:00–02:00

Raresh
📅 October 9, 23:59–08:00
📍 Ministerium, Praça do Comércio

TKESHI Festival LX Edition
📅 October 10, 16:00–23:00
📍 Those Who Dance, Av. Infante D. Henrique
💸 Ticket
The festival was born in 2020 in the Kojori pine forest outside Tbilisi. After Georgia’s political crisis and the ban on using the forest venue, it moved to Lisbon. Saturday is the final showcase after a week of labs: electronic music and video created as one unified work. A chance to see the Georgian scene without flying to Tbilisi.

Intercell
📅 October 10, 15:00–23:59
📍 Escala25, under the 25 de Abril Bridge
💸 Ticket
Trance and techno right under the bridge: cars rumble overhead, the Tagus flows nearby. Headliners are Pegassi and Australian DJ Partiboi69 with his ghetto house and provocative stage persona. This is the last open-air of the season; after that, parties move indoors until spring. 21+.

Two Lanes — “A Part Of Us”
📅 October 10, 21:00
📍 LAV, Sala 2
💸 €25
German brothers Leo and Rafa Schmid perform live on piano and analogue synthesizers. The concert starts as neoclassical and ends as melodic techno, and you will not notice the moment it shifts. For anyone who wants to both listen and dance.

See

This weekend is all about exhibitions: Valentino and Vasconcelos at MAAT, the “la Caixa” collection at Gulbenkian, and Fontcuberta at the Water Museum. The stage is weaker, but Porto’s puppet festival and dance in Almada make up for it.

Lisbon and surroundings

“VENUS” — Valentino through the eyes of Joana Vasconcelos
📅 all weekend, until February 22
📍 MAAT, Belém
💸 €12
More than 40 Valentino Garavani haute couture pieces among works by Joana Vasconcelos (Portugal’s best-known contemporary artist, famous for her giant textile sculptures). Hanging from the ceiling is her 18-metre “Valquíria Vénus”. MAAT is marking its tenth anniversary with this exhibition. The most photogenic exhibition of the autumn, followed by a walk along the Belém waterfront.

“Pintar é Fácil. Faça Você Mesmo!”
📅 opening October 10, until February 8
📍 Museu Gulbenkian
💸 €12
The title means “Painting is Easy. Do It Yourself!”, and it is ironic. Around 40 works by 31 artists from the Spanish “la Caixa” foundation’s collection explore how contemporary art argues with the very idea of painting. Artists include Germans Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke, Colombian Doris Salcedo and Portuguese Ana Jotta. The opening is on Saturday, and the museum is open until 21:00, so you can come after dinner.

Joan Fontcuberta — “Wunderkammer”
📅 from October 10, opening at 15:00
📍 Museu da Água, Rua do Alviela 12
💸 Ticket
The Spanish photographer has spent his career making convincing fakes: nonexistent animals with “scientific” descriptions, a Soviet cosmonaut who never existed. Eight series are assembled in a cabinet of curiosities; the exhibition is part of the Imago Lisboa festival. In the age of deepfakes, it feels particularly timely: count how many times you believe what you see.

📅 October 10, 21:00
📍 Fórum Municipal Romeu Correia, Almada
💸 Ticket
The Italian company of choreographer Pablo Girolamo at the Quinzena de Dança de Almada festival. Trypophobia is the fear of clusters of small holes, and Girolamo turns it into a dance piece about anxiety and paranoia. There are no words, so language is no obstacle — but the unsettling feeling will stay with you.

International Ocean Film Tour
📅 October 10, 19:00
📍 Museu do Mar Rei D. Carlos, Cascais
💸 Ticket
Five documentaries about the ocean and people whose lives revolve around it — two and a half hours in total. The screening takes place at the maritime museum just steps from the water in Cascais. If you moved to Portugal for the ocean, this is your evening.

Rogier Bak — “Bak to the Future”
📅 October 9 and 10, 19:00
📍 Xafarix Bar, Santos (Republic of Comedy)
💸 €10–15
Dutch comedian with a solo show in English: what it is like to be stuck between the past and the future, billionaires and smart speakers that listen in. A tiny bar, with the front row one metre from the stage — there is nowhere to hide. A good night if you feel like laughing in a language you understand. 18+.

Porto and surroundings

Serralves — Holzer, Gehry, Neel
📅 all weekend
📍 Fundação de Serralves
💸 Ticket
Three major exhibitions at once. Glowing running texts by American artist Jenny Holzer, phrases that hit like graffiti, are on display only until November 1. Frank Gehry, the architect of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and his century. Alice Neel, the New York artist who spent half a century painting neighbours instead of celebrities. Plus Serralves Park, which is especially beautiful in October.

FIMP — performances in English
📅 “Fasten Your Seat Belts!”: October 10, 21:00; October 11, 15:00 and 17:00. “Cargo”: October 9, 19:30; October 10, 16:00 and 19:30
📍 Teatro Campo Alegre and Rivoli
💸 €9
Porto’s international puppet festival brings two adult productions in English, 40 minutes each. A Lithuanian theatre from Klaipėda sends humanity into space, away from earthly problems (12+). Slovenes from Maribor climb into a truck cabin and tell stories about life on the road (16+). If you think puppets are just for children, this evening will change your mind.

Eat/Drink

It is harvest season, so almost everything here is about wine. The most colourful is Bucelas with its Sunday parade; the rest are either fairs or full-day trips.

What else is interesting

The main event in Lisbon this weekend is Obama at MEO Arena, but four hours of a forum for €90 is a lot to pay for the chance to see him in person. The free events look more interesting: fashion week spills onto Rua Augusta, while circus workshops at Barcarena stay open until 2 a.m.

Lisbon and surroundings

The forum lasts four and a half hours; besides Obama, 24 speakers will appear, mostly Portuguese top executives. They include Altice Portugal (MEO) CEO Ana Figueiredo, EDP CEO Miguel Stilwell and Sporting president Frederico Varandas. Go for Obama: having a former US president in the same room as you is a rare opportunity. 16+.

At the National Society of Fine Arts (SNBA), there is an exhibition of nine photographers who have covered ModaLisboa since 1991. Medieval Óbidos, with bookshops at every turn, is a better setting for such a meeting than any hall. In Portuguese, Fosse’s “Septology”, “Morning and Evening”, “Trilogy” and “The Boathouse” have been published.

Al Mossassa, Marvão
📅 October 9–11 (rescheduled from last weekend due to the weather)

This year the festival is part of the programme marking 800 years of the town charter. The drive from Lisbon takes around three hours, but the view from the walls of Marvão is worth it.
