Fuel prices at petrol stations across Portugal will rise again from Monday, September 7. According to an estimate by the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP), diesel will increase by 15 cents per litre, while 95-octane petrol will rise by 12 cents, ECO reports. The average price could reach €2.169 per litre for diesel and €2.142 for petrol.
Filling a 50-litre diesel tank will cost around €108. For petrol, this will be the sharpest weekly increase since June 2022, when prices rose by 12.6 cents per litre amid the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Even on Wednesday, the forecast was (slightly) lower: CNN Portugal reported increases of 14 and 10 cents.
The increase is being driven by higher oil prices amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Oil is ending the week with its strongest rise since July.
The ACP estimate is based on oil prices at the close of trading on Thursday and does not take into account an adjustment to the fuel tax (ISP, Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos) discount.
The government has pledged to temporarily reduce ISP whenever the weekly increase exceeds 10 cents, so the actual price rise may be smaller than forecast. Final average prices will be known on Monday; prices vary considerably between petrol stations and regions.
If possible, it may be worth filling up before the weekend.
