Portugal’s President António José Seguro has finally signed the new immigration law, doing so on the evening of August 31. He referred all his concerns about whether the interests of children had been adequately protected and whether the detention periods for foreigners who had committed no crime were proportionate to the Constitutional Court — effectively giving the court the final say.
But, as we reported, the court unanimously found no provisions that conflicted with the Constitution, limiting itself to issuing guidance for courts and government agencies. After that ruling, the president chose not to veto the law. It will enter into force once it is published in the Diário da República.
