This is a rare weekend: almost everything worthwhile in Lisbon and the surrounding area is free, while the paid concerts are either long sold out (Sigur Rós in Porto, Moonspell in Sintra, Nicolas Bearde in Chiado) or aimed at a very specific audience. The main Saturday decision is whether to see Mariza at Praça do Comércio or the Diotima Quartet at Gulbenkian — and if you want something completely off the tourist track, head to Trafaria for free bluegrass.

Continente is returning to the capital for the first time in ten years with a free festival in the city’s main square: food and local farmers’ produce during the day, followed in the evening by NAPA (who represented Portugal at Eurovision this year) and Mariza — the country’s leading fado singer, who is rarely heard for free in Lisbon. Expect a big crowd, so come early.

The French Diotima Quartet is one of the world’s finest ensembles specializing in 20th- and 21st-century music, and this concert closes the Kurtág and Jolàs series at Gulbenkian: Bartók’s Fourth Quartet, Ravel’s Quartet, and two works by living modern masters, all in one evening. For serious chamber-music lovers, this is the event of the weekend.

Jazz em Monserrate

Jazz in Monserrate Park at sunset, with a different lineup every night: on Friday, pianist Daniel Bernardes provides a live score for the silent film Nosferatu; on Saturday, American singer Becca Stevens; and on Sunday, João Barradas Trio with New York guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg. The most beautiful way to spend a September evening in Sintra; on Saturday and Sunday mornings, there is also jazz for toddlers (ages 0–3, €15 per adult with child).
Trafaria Bluegrass

Portugal’s only bluegrass festival: seven bands from the US, Ireland, Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands and Portugal play 12 concerts across the fishing village — in the church, in the square and at the fire station. The main guest is Maine-based fiddler Erica Brown, who will perform twice; there is a ferry from Belém, and the trip itself is part of the fun.

A festival of contemporary music in the courtyard and halls of São Luiz Theatre: on Saturday, guitarist Norberto Lobo performs solo alongside the Portuguese-American trio Rhizome; on Sunday, the festival closes with Ensemble of Other Living Beings. Improvisation, electronics and jazz without genre boundaries — for anyone looking for something smart, short and free in the heart of Chiado.

Saturday evening is worth the trip from Porto.

Ten hours by the river, from lunch to midnight, making this the weekend’s biggest open-air in terms of names on the lineup.

This isn’t a club but two days in the dunes with sunsets and installations — the country’s most beautiful dance setting, just half an hour from Lisbon.

The final three days of the 20th-anniversary edition of MOTELx: on September 12, the closing film Fall 2: Deadpoint; on the 13th, a surprise FilmTwist screening, with the title not revealed until the screening begins. Even if horror isn’t your genre, this is the only Lisbon festival where the audience is part of the show: cosplay, people screaming at the screen, and applause for every kill.

CCB opens the new season with nine performances, installations and concerts across the complex. The highlight is The Disappearing Act by British artist Yinka Esi Graves, a solo performance combining flamenco and video (September 11 at 19:00, September 12 at 20:00); among the free events is a krump session at the MAC museum on September 12 and 13 at 17:00.

Once a year, places that are normally closed to the public open their doors: Roman remains in the basements of hotels and shops, car parks, laboratories and private homes — 74 locations and 123 tours with archaeologists. Registration opened on September 7 and in previous years filled up a day in advance, so write now.
Eat/Drink
September in Portugal means the grape harvest, and this weekend it finally comes out into the open: in Dão, eight quintas are opening their cellars right in the middle of harvest, while in Cartaxo, UB40 will play among the vineyards. In Lisbon itself, down-to-earth Amadora has brought together chefs you normally only see at restaurants with a queue outside.

People from almost a hundred countries live in Amadora, and once a year their cuisines come together in one park: a market with food trucks and stalls, while on stage Vítor Sobral, Kiko Martins, Chakall and Pedro Pena Bastos cook alongside home cooks from local communities. Last year, 20,000 people attended; on Saturday evening, there are also concerts and a DJ set running until midnight.

For the 13th year in a row, Casa da América Latina turns the fairgrounds next to the casino into a Latin American neighborhood: around 80 stalls, from Mexican tacos to Argentine beef, plus music, dancing and free forró and tango lessons. If you’re in Cascais, this is the best dinner of the weekend for roughly the price of a bus ticket.

A grape-harvest festival in Ribatejo that this year is bringing in an international act for the first time — UB40, of “Red Red Wine” fame, will perform literally among the vines; during the day there are tastings, chefs, workshops and a kids’ area, followed in the evening by Santos & Pecadores and Expensive Soul. An hour from Lisbon, and one of those occasions where the wine and the concert are equally worth the trip.

Eight Dão wineries — from an 18th-century counts’ palace to Quinta da Boiça — are opening their doors in the middle of harvest: tastings with winemakers, wine-pairing dinners, sunsets in the vineyards and, most importantly, a chance to taste the 2026 grape must before it has even become wine. The first edition sold out completely, and places are limited.

Brazilian singer Vitor Kley performs Friday at 22:00, followed by Carolina de Deus on Saturday; come for the atmosphere, the street food and whatever music you happen to stumble upon.
