The first weekend of September is packed with events but short on discoveries: The Weeknd in Restelo — a stadium show like anywhere else, Ivete Sangalo in Estoril — €60+ for samba for the initiated, while the free listings are mostly second-tier names. The one thing that’s hard to replicate is Saturday at Festa do Avante: Tuareg blues from Bombino, António Zambujo’s fado with a bossa nova twist, and 85-year-old Ney Matogrosso (the Brazilian Bowie) for €35, if you don’t mind the political banners.

Dance
The weekend’s dance lineup rests on one name — Carl Cox, but even he is playing at a venue the promoter still hasn’t named two days before the event, while bringing along the same lineup you’d find at any major European open air. The real find is hiding in Caparica: Aurora, capped at 600 people, with Bradley Zero, CC:DISCO! and Kamma & Masalo for €35 — a rare case where smaller is better than bigger.

There’s essentially nothing to watch this weekend except movies: MOTELx has put together a 20th-anniversary program that Lisbon can actually be proud of, while everything else is either wrapping up something that ran throughout August or is a 35-minute niche affair. If you pick just one evening, make it Sunday at São Jorge: Na Hong-jin’s Hope, from the director of The Wailing, starring Fassbender and Vikander, followed by Nekromantik with Jörg Buttgereit himself in the audience.

The horror festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with the biggest program in its history — 170 films from 40 countries over 11 days. This weekend: Yeon Sang-ho’s Colony (Train to Busan) on Friday, Pinocchio: Unstrung and a documentary about The Cramps on Saturday, Hope and Nekromantik, followed by a conversation with Jörg Buttgereit, on Sunday. There are also retrospectives of Roger Corman and Sergio Martino, plus Tony Scott’s The Hunger with Bowie and Deneuve. A must if horror is your genre; if it isn’t, Hope is worth seeing simply as a good Korean film.

Saturday evening brings a Phil Collins tribute and the “Tarde do Garrafão” from noon, which translates politely as “the big-bottle day.” Forty minutes from Lisbon; Sunday morning in Palmela is worth the early start.

Tavira is the only Portuguese city on UNESCO’s Mediterranean Diet list, and once a year it makes the most of it: 200 stalls, four restaurants serving Portuguese, Italian and Moroccan cuisine in the Palácio da Galeria park, and 28 establishments across the city with themed menus. The main stage features Carolina Deslandes (Fri), Marco Rodrigues (Sat) and Diogo Piçarra (Sun); by the old fish market, CRUA, RAIA and O Gajo offer a new take on traditional music. If you’re in the Algarve, this is the only thing there worth your attention this weekend.

The country’s biggest motoring festival: 1,700 cars, motorcycles and aircraft, 50,000 spectators and the historic Rampa Histórica hill climb, where a Formula 1 car — the 1975 Copersucar FD03, part of the Fittipaldi brothers’ legacy — will race for the first time on Saturday at 09:00, driven by Tiago Monteiro. The museum features the Fórmula Mágica exhibition with Ayrton Senna’s Lotus, in which he won his first race at Estoril, plus a Mansell Williams and Schumacher Ferrari. There’s also an air show and the Motorlândia kids’ park. Far away, but the only event of the weekend worth driving halfway across the country for.
